1. Introduction

In the Carpathian Basin - and, within this, in Pest-Buda , has gone through several hardships during the course of history. It was a strange coincidence in the row of great and important events in the 16th century that the Reformation movement by Luther and the spread of the Ottoman Empire , which later ruled over Hungary for 150 years, took place almost at the same time in this region

At the beginning of this time period the Word of God still encouraged and consoled the faithful in the Buda Castle and in several other places in Hungary, however during the decades of the Ottoman occupation the voice of the Word of the Lord could only be heard in the intimate secrecy of private congregations among hardships and permanent harassment and persecution. Most of the magnificent, Gothic churches in Buda were gradually converted into mosques and minarets (1).

Members belonging to the Christian faith, Catholics and Protestants Catholics and Protestants together, could use the Mary-Magdalene Church in the Castle area: the former could celebrate their masses in the choir, while the Lutherans could have their services in the nave (2).
